Meaningful Memories

The projects that the students shared with us has left a big impression on me so I wanted to share the details of them here.

experience

One group shared that their project is connecting Maths, Art (colour) and Social Studies (women) together. They are aware that their family is curious about the impact of cell phones on their attention span and their memory. So they decided to explore the connection between technology and memory and that they have been exploring Working Memory and visual memory.

The main purpose of their project is to create a book of the memories of the members of their family that have never shared their stories. They are creating biographies that chronicle the problems that members of their family have experienced. The students were inspired by the protagonists in their family, for example, a grandma who was working as a nurse at a hospital that experienced an explosion.

They talked about the power of how sharing memories leads to healing. The students explained how the interviews that they conducted have led to closer relationships. They have been surprised that some relatives were initially reluctant to share their stories but they are glad that they have been able to convince them.

Another group of students are co-creating recipe books that use ingredients from indigenous plants and animals. Their aspiration is to connect the healing qualities of food with the stories of soldiers that have been involved in conflict. Their hope is that they can transform anger into a feeling of peace.

Their books are made of recycled paper in which they will press the flowers of indigenous plants. They will be inviting visitors to their table at a Book Fair in April 2025 to touch the flowers and pause enough to share their feelings. They want Colombia to be a part of the resolution of world conflicts.
